Matt Burgess, Design & Digital Project Leader
What do you do for Dementia Adventure?
I create materials that help people understand the impact and difference we make here at Dementia Adventure. It’s a wide remit! It may involve designing printed marketing materials for our holidays and training, create impact reports and fundraising campaigns, or involve filming and editing training and promotional videos. With these assets we show how people can live better with dementia, tell them about our services and encourage funding and donations that are crucial to us as a charity.
What’s the best thing about your job?
Seeing the real difference we make to the lives of people living with dementia and working with the talented team of people that make up our organisation. I love design and I love solving a design problem.
What makes you want to work for Dementia Adventure?
Each year we publish our ‘Impact Report’. It shows our growth and all the impact we have on helping people live better with dementia. What’s most inspiring for me is the amazing quotes from people with dementia and their family and professional carers. Typically people have a new lease of life and are hugely thankful for the quality time that they get to experience with the people they love and care for.
What’s the best advice you have ever been given?
When I started working at Dementia Adventure I attended one of our family carer support workshops. This was some of the best advice that I took from that session. Firstly, for someone with dementia the deterioration of memory does not mean that person has disappeared. They are changed, but still there. Secondly, even if someone with dementia does not remember the fun activities or good things you do for them, you still made a difference to them on an emotional level—actually both to them and to you! See through their eyes and live in the moment.
