Paula Nelson, Project Coordinator
Paula joined Dementia Adventure in July 2017. Prior to that she worked for Birmingham Wellbeing Service where she managed a number of projects that aimed to get the inactive to be more active outdoors. She worked to identify and implement appropriate and engaging physical activity programmes that were delivered in the city’s parks and green spaces in collaboration with national sponsors, community-based organisations, charities and local residents groups.
Paula’s passion is to make activity outside accessible to all, working to remove barriers that people face because of their financial situation, ability to travel or because of physical, emotional or social difficulties. Paula is excited to bring her passion and experience to her role with the new ‘Dementia Adventure in a Box’ project support by Big Lottery Fund.
Before working for Birmingham City Council, Paula lived in Chicago for 2.5 years with her family after her husband was offered an overseas job. Whilst in Chicago, Paula established herself as a running coach, working particularly with individuals and groups who had never run or done physical activity before. She also achieved her own personal goal of running a marathon, completing the Chicago marathon in October 2012.
Paula’s early career was as a Careers Adviser, working in schools, colleges and community venues supporting young people to make a successful transition from education to the world of work. During this time Paula lived and worked in various locations, including Sheffield, Leicester and Glasgow.
Paula lives in Birmingham with her family and enjoys running and learning new skills (she is currently learning to play the piano!).
Paula is available from Monday to Thursday and can be contacted on her mobile 07948 557291.
