A small group of Dementia Adventure staff travelled to Surrey on April 4th to join a large group of Bhavna’s family and friends to celebrate her life in a very personal and moving celebration. Bhavna’s recent passing came after an extended period of living with brain cancer and during this time, in true Bhavna style, she became a powerful campaigner for more research into brain cancer. Amazingly, amongst all this personal upheaval Bhavna continued to Chair Dementia Adventure and led the organisation to where it is today. During the latter stages of her illness Bhavna took the difficult decision to hand over the reigns to a new leader, and personally led the process of the new Chair, John Barnes, being elected to carry on her work.
DA CEO, Neil Mapes first met Bhavna back in 2010, at the beginning of the DA story, on a leadership course at Windsor castle and she has been one of our strongest supporters and was our founding Chair. From that day to her last she was dearly loved by all at DA for her belief in and commitment to our work, for her personal yet very professional support, for her sense of fun and the regular reminders she gave us to stop and celebrate the successes along the way. Bhavna’s legacy will continue in so many ways, primarily in her amazing children, but also in all that Dementia Adventure does in the future to reach and benefit more people. Bhavna’s generosity and gratitude are summed up by some of her final words in her celebration ceremony card “thanks to life which has given me so much”. She is dearly missed and very much in our thoughts.
